Sustainability communication is a difficult communication discipline. You cannot simply call yourself green, sustainable or climate-friendly without having the documentation in place. And empty-sounding declarations of intent and promises of gold and green forests are not recommendable approaches either – in case anyone had any doubts about that.
When you communicate about sustainability, you communicate about your organization’s anchoring in the world and your consumption of the earth’s resources. It’s complicated stuff that requires you to be in control of the relevant legislation – at the same time that you act authentically and tell your story in a credible way.
Many fear – with good reason – being accused of greenwashing when they communicate about sustainability. Unfortunately, this has the consequence that some choose to refrain from communicating about sustainability measures – the “green houses”. Unfortunately, this just means that they lose the competitive advantages that are sustainable.
Sustainability communication is important because it helps your customers choose you over other, less sustainable, companies. And at the same time, it is absolutely central if you want to make your responsibility strategy an advantage for the business and the brand.
When you want to do good sustainability communication, it’s about going one step deeper. Nice words and nice colors are not enough – the documentation must be in order, and your values must be clearly stated. Communicating about sustainability is both simple and difficult. On the one hand, you just have to say what it is you do and why – on the other hand, it requires that you actually know how to tell your own story in an engaging way.
